Runs Girls Ask Government To Legalize Prostitution

Runs girls more commonly known as prostitutes have asked the Federal Government to legalize prostitution.

Ms.Amaka Enemo, national coordinator, National Sex Workers Association, has appealed to the Federal Government to de-criminalise sex work in Nigeria for effective control of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Enemo made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing newsmen at the inauguration of a new report on ‘Understanding the high risk of urban sexual networks in Nigeria.’

The national coordinator said that everybody is at risk of whatever he does, adding that sex workers faced a lot of violence especially from their clients, thugs and law enforcement agents.

She said that most of the times, police and other law enforcement agents exploit sex workers when they raid their brothels or streets where sex workers conduct their business.

“When they are arrested, some of the law enforcement agents demand and conduct unprotected sexual acts with the sex workers who do not have money.

“This exposes the sex workers to the risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections,” she said.

According to Enemo, de-criminalising sex work will reduce the risk and the violence sex workers face in Nigeria.

She added that government would also benefit from the sex workers because they would pay tax.

The national coordinator said that in Amsterdam where sex work is legalised, sex workers pay 160 Euros to enable them stay in a ‘window for eight hours.’

15 rescued, dozens feared dead,As Building Collapses In Lagos Island-see photo

At about 2pm yesterday 25th of July eyewitnesses called the Toll-free emergency line 112 to report that a building had collapsed at No 3 Massey street, Lagos Island.

The Emergency responders immediately left base for the scene. As at 7pm last night, 5 children and 10 adults had been rescued.

20 hours after the collapse, the recovery operation is still ongoing by the emergency responders of the LASEMA Response Unit and other responder agencies searching through the debris with Heavy duty and light rescue equipment to ensure that they are no other victims trapped in the rubble.

Once the site has been declared stable, reclamation will commence.
It is a great relief to know that Lagos State now has a robust Emergency rescue team with the appropriate equipment at its disposal to attend to such emergencies swiftly.

The days when emergencies like this occur and we have inadequate manpower or had to rely on construction companies to respond to such incidents are long gone.

This is of merit to the current administration that has taken it upon itself to put her residents first. It’s safe to say that Lagos State truly cares.

Buhari’s Illness Has Taken A Toll On His Health, Visiting Governor Says

One of Nigeria’s state governors who met with President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Wednesday said this evening he was delighted to see the national leader in person after so many weeks of uncertainty.

He told SaharaReporters anonymously that the delegation of seven governors found Mr. Buhari to be “much better shape than earlier speculated,” and in full control of his faculties.

“Yes, the illness had a taken a toll on his health,” he said, describing Buhari’s walk as “okay” if his advanced age is factored in.

Of the president’s speech, “I did not notice any remarkable change in his voice,” the governor declared.

He said he and his colleagues enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at Mr. Buhari’s residence before their departure but did not clarify whether the president participated in the meal, or how long they were with him.
“We met one of your correspondents hanging around at the gate asking questions on whether the President is going to return home in two weeks,” he said of SaharaReporters.
The governor further said that members of his delegation believed Mr. Buhari should follow the advice of his doctors and not be stampeded into rushing back home.
“After all, he has left the country in a very capable hand, fiercely loyal, competent, cerebral and unambitious,” he said, referring to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
President Buhari is thought to be suffering from cancer, but he has refused to disclose his diagnosis.  Wednesday marked the 80th day of his “medical vacation” in the United Kingdom.

'My wife got pregnant for her boss, aborted without my knowledge'

'My wife got pregnant for her boss, aborted without my knowledge'
Bolaji is married to Bimpe with four children but her adulterous life has destroyed their marriage culminating in her getting pregnant for her boss.

My name is Bolaji, a 42-year-old married man with four children, though I must say I cannot vouch for the paternity of two of the children.

My fear over their paternity arose following my wife's adulterous lifestyle. Bimpe has always been cheating on me but because I come from a broken home, I kept tolerating her as I did not want my children to go through that route.

But it comes a time in a man's life when he has to take some decisions no matter how painful it may seem and I have now come to the time where I have to let go to save myself from the embarrassment I get from my family and friends who all know what she does.

The last straw that broke the Camel's back was when she got pregnant for her boss in the office and carried out an abortion that almost claimed her liafe.

I was at work when I was called by a strange number with the person identifying himself as a doctor at a private hospital, requesting that I should come immediately.

My first fear was that one of my children was rushed there but when I asked the doctor what the emergency was, he declined to tell me but insisted I must come immediately as it was a life and death situation.

I managed to drive to the hospital with great trepidation and wild thoughts raging in my head. When I got there, the doctor took me to his office and told me that my wife was rushed to the hospital and that an urgent surgery had to be conducted on her or she would lose her life.

When I asked the doctor what the problem was, the man berated me seriously, asking why I should encourage my wife to get an abortion from a quack doctor which has destroyed her womb and if it is not removed immediately, she could die.

I was taken aback and told the doctor that I did not know what he was talking about. I, however, told him to take me to see Bimpe and when I was alone with her, I asked her who got her pregnant and when she had the abortion.

She broke down and started by asking for my forgiveness before she could confess. When I assured her I would forgive her, she said it was her boss who got her pregnant and she had to do an abortion before I could notice the pregnancy.

To cut a long story short, I had to sign the consent forms for the surgery to be carried out to save her life but I made it clear to her that this would be the end of the marriage.

Since she was discharged from the hospital, she has been living with her parents and as much as they have been begging me to forgive her and take her back, I have made up my mind to divorce her.

Have I taken the wrong step so far?

Couple kill 5-day-old baby to cover up pre-marital sex

A couple in Kano State is in trouble for killing a five-day-old baby to hide evidence that they had indulged in pre-marital sex.

To cover up evidence of their pre-marital sex which is an abomination according to Sharia Laws, an young couple in Kano State, Aminu Mustapha and Faiza Haruna, have strangulated a 5-day-old baby girl in Rijiyar Lemo in Fagge local government area of the state.

According to Weekly Trust, the couple got married two months ago without anyone knowing that the 17-year-old wife was pregnant until she gave birth to a baby girl last weekend.

To hide the fact that they had engaged in pre-marital sex before they got married, they allegedly killed the baby and buried her in their neighbourhood.

A neighbour said Faiza delivered the baby at home without the help of any medical personnel.

"During the pregnancy, she didn’t attend any antenatal clinic. It was we that assisted her during child labour. She delivered the baby safely and we assisted her with all the necessary cleaning up.

Hours after giving birth, Faiza started telling people that the baby was sick.

We advised her to take the baby to hospital but three days later, she and her husband returned home without the baby.

We drew the attention of Hisbah officials and they were arrested because we suspected foul play."

It was at the Hisbah office that Faiza confessed that she killed the baby.

The Hisbah commandant in Fagge local government, Ustaz Salisu Umar, said the couple killed the baby to cover up their premarital affairs.

In her confession, Faiza said:

"I gave birth to the baby and killed her myself. I did so to avoid embarrassment from members of our community. I was impregnated by my husband before we got married.

I didn’t use anything; it was my bare hands that I used in killing her.
I went into my room when my husband was not around and strangulated her."

Only Referendum'll Resolve Problems in Nigeria - Pro-Biafra Groups

Only Referendum'll Resolve Problems in Nigeria - Pro-Biafra Groups

By Dennis Agbo and Ugochukwu Alaribe

Enugu — The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has stated that whether people boycott elections or not, winners must emerge in any scheduled election.

The electoral body said that whatever number of people that participated in an election, the conduct would obviously produce a winner, adding that no matter the agitation anybody or group may have, elections are crucial to governance since somebody must be a helmsman at any point in time.

INEC also noted that even if there would be a referendum in the country, INEC registers would be relied upon to determine legibility for participation in the referendum.

INEC spoke as two pro-Biafra groups; Eastern Elders Forum and Defenders of Truth stated that only a referendum would resolve the prevailing political turmoil in Nigeria and urged the Federal Government to conduct one without further delay.

The groups further warned that the call for a referendum by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafra, MASSOB and other agitating groups in the country do not amount to the declaration of war and urged the Federal Government to do the needful.

Boycott or not, winner must emerge -- INEC

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Enugu State, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu made the statements in Enugu in a press briefing on the state of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, CVR, in the state.

Ononamadu noted that it would be wiser if eligible voters are registered since the greater participation of voters in elections help discourage electoral malpractice.

He, however, said that so far, there has not been any challenge of pro-Biafra groups against the exercise in the state.

He disclosed that there is a wide gap between census figures and the number of voters and urged people up to 18 years that have not obtained voters cards to do so in order to close the wide margin.

Ononamadu further disclosed that 68, 672 voters have so far registered in the on-going CVR while 8 registration centers were approved in addition to 17 statutory centers in the state.

He said that the state has so far distributed 3, 978 Permanent Voters Card, PVC, while 4000 cards were either lost or defaced.

He noted that the second quarter of the CVR will immediately commence from July 31, 2017, adding that "this is the first time we are practicing what the law says and the continuous registration will continue till close to the election."

The INEC chief said that display of voters registers have commenced at the registration centers and urged people to check if their names were either omitted or spelled wrongly.

Only referendum 'll resolve Nigeria's problems

Briefing newsmen in Aba, chairmen of Eastern Elders Forum and Defenders of Truth; Mazi Jude Chukwu and Mazi Ukaegbu O. Ukaegbu, respectively, warned that the Federal Government would be playing with fire if it continues to delay the conduct of a referendum to allow component units in Nigeria to determine their future.

"We state that the only solution for the present political imbroglio is for the Federal Government of Nigeria to conduct a referendum in order to set free some component units of the country that are seeking for self-determination. We further state that the call for a referendum by the IPOB, MASSOB, EPC and other agitating groups in the country doesn't amount to war or violence, but a peaceful and good settlement of the present turmoil in the country."

The groups expressed concern about the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its youth wing and warned them not to risk the lives and property of Ndigbo through unguarded utterances.

"Some utterances from Ohanaeze Ndigbo and its youth wing led by one Okechukwu Isiguzo, amount to outright desecration of Igbo culture and tradition. We hereby use this medium to warn some self-acclaimed Igbo leaders to stop their antics. They should desist or face the wrath of elders of Ndigbo in the country or Diaspora."

New Jersey governor signs bills protecting transgender residents

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed two pieces of legislation on Friday (21 July) giving transgender residents greater protections.

The first bill prevents school districts from forcing transgender students to use facilities that correspond to their birth sex rather than gender identity.

It also requires the state education commissioner to establish guidelines for how to handle name and gender-identity changes, participation in student activities and preferred pronoun usage.

It further allows students to wear clothing that corresponds with their gender identity and allows for the creation of LGBTI student clubs.

The bill states that at a minimum, schools must make ‘reasonable alternative arrangements if needed to ensure a student’s safety and comfort.’

The second bill forbids health insurance companies from denying coverage or charging higher premiums because of gender identity.

Surprise move

Christie signing the school bill came as a surprise to some, NJ.com reported. In March, the Republican governor indicated such decisions should be left to the individual school districts.

Christie’s office declined to comment.

Garden State Equality, the state’s largest LGBTI rights group, applauded the Republican governor taking a stand for LGBTI residents, the Observer reported.

“We are ecstatic that the governor has decided to stand on the right side of history by protecting all of New Jersey’s residents,” said Christian Fuscarino, executive director of Garden State Equality.

Both bills were sponsored by Democratic Assemblymember Valerie Huttle of Bergen, and had bipartisan support.

Huttle issued a statement saying the school bill should help change cultural perceptions of transgender children and “hopefully influence how students treat each other in and outside of school.”

“Trans children are harassed and bullied for daring to be themselves,” Huttle said. “This has to stop.”

The Observer reported that in urging her colleagues to pass the bill, Huttle cited a study by the National Center for Transgender Equality, which found that 41 percent of transgender people attempted suicide in their lifetimes, compared with 1.6 percent for the general population.

1 arrested after fire underneath Seattle viaduct

1 arrested after fire underneath Seattle viaduct

One person was arrested after a fire started underneath Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct, creating heavy smoke that shut down traffic on SR 99 Sunday afternoon.

Northbound lanes of SR 99 have reopened after officials closed traffic at the West Seattle Bridge. Southbound lanes remained closed from Denny Way to Columbia Street so firefighters can reach the area where the brush fire started.

Seattle Fire Department said the brush fire broke out the 1900 block of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and quickly engulfed a nearby homeless encampment where several people had pitched their tents.

Around 20 tents were in the burn area, which measured around 300 feet by 300 feet.

Nearby railroad tracks were closed as the fire spread. Within minutes, firefighters quickly put out the flames and were putting water on remaining hot spots.  The railroad tracks have since reopened.

People were evacuated from the area and no injuries were reported.

Officers arrested a man who witnesses claimed set the fire. Officers booked him into King County Jail for investigation of arson.

Seattle Department of Transportation officials plan to inspect the underside of the viaduct for any structural damage caused by the heat.

At the same time a few blocks away from the brush fire in a separate incident, a mini van was engulfed in flames in the Belltown neighborhood. Fire officials say there's no indication the van fire was related to the brush fire.

Five medals for New Zealand at World Para Athletics Championships

Five medals for New Zealand at World Para Athletics Championships

New Zealand has finished the World Para Athletics Championships in London with five medals, with runners William Stedman and Keegan Pitcher adding two on a successful final day of competition.

Stedman and Pitcher crossed the finish line second and third during the T36 800m final, with times of 2min 11.86sec and 2min 13.49sec getting the pair on the podium.
James Turner of Australia won the race in 2min 8.78sec.

Pitcher had earlier won a bronze medal in the 400m in a personal best and New Zealand record time of 55.23sec.

New Zealand's other medals came from Jessica Hamill in the F34 shot put and Holly Robinson in the F46 javelin. Hamill's best throw of 7.77m earned her a bronze while Robinson's 42.41m effort landed her a silver medal.

Anna Grimaldi fell just shy of a medal in the T47 long jump, her 5.21m leap only good enough for fourth. Stedman also finished fourth in the long jump, in the T36 classification, jumping 5.35m.

It was a successful haul for the New Zealand team, surpassing the four they won at the last world championships.

Scaramucci tries and fails to pretend he didn’t write op-ed saying ‘America deserves better’ than Trump

Scaramucci tries and fails to pretend he didn’t write op-ed saying ‘America deserves better’ than Trump

Newly-hires White House communications director Anthony Scarmucci spent nearly 30 minutes speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper Sunday morning where they tried to basically cram every recent Trump scandal into one exhausting interview.

One topic of discussion was The Mooch’s history of anti-Trump rhetoric from the past two years, calling Trump a “hack politician,” opposing the proposed wall along the U.S. – Mexico border, and supporting gun control.

Tapper brings up an op-ed Scaramucci wrote for Fox Business back in January of 2016 that very clearly calls Trump a demagogue. Scaramucci’s initial response is to pretend he wasn’t talking about Trump.

Tapper points out that people will look at the op-ed, in which Scaramucci compares Trump’s own rhetoric to the attitudes which “led to the internment of Japanese-American citizens and rejection of European-Jewish refugees” during WWII, and conclude “this guys is willing to suppress everything he believes in order to get close to power.” Scarmucci claims this is “totally not true” and then launches into a series of explanations that contradict each other.

“All I’m doing by deleting the tweets is sending a message,” The Mooch explains, apparently trying his best to not have to talk about the op-ed.

He then goes on to complain that if you change your mind on a subject in Washington, you’re branded a hypocrite. It would be a complaint worth considering if his views had evolved gradually over time.

But Scaramucci went from railing against “unbridled demagoguery” a year and a half ago to praising Trump’s ability to throw a perfect spiral through a tire.

Scaramucci also tries to make that case that he never actually called Trump a demagogue, and this is technically true in the sense that in his op-ed he never once writes Trump’s name.

However, phrases like “the reckless behavior of a man who knows a thing or two about bankruptcy” make it pretty clear who Scaramucci is talking about.

Tapper points all that out, and sort of forces The Mooch to concede the obvious point, but then Scaramucci just quickly shifts his stance and claims none of it even matters.

“You’re trying to nail me, you’re gonna play the gotcha thing with me,” Scaramucci says, as if mentioning something you wrote and had published is somehow beyond the bounds of decency in an interview. “It’s fine, Jake. I don’t care. You know who doesn’t care? The president doesn’t care.”

The Mooch then goes on to explain the timeline of how he went from supporting Scott Walker to now being a Trump guy, at one point saying “I’m a very competitive person.

I have no problem being combative.” So, basically admitting that yes, he will say and do anything in order to win and get close to power, the very thing he denied at the beginning of the exchange.

Again, Scarmucci assures us all, “I actually do not care.”

Of course not. That’s the entire point Tapper was trying to make. Scaramucci is the type of person who will say and do anything as long as it’s politically expedient, regardless of how he actually feels.

Georgia NAACP President Francys Johnson steps down

Georgia NAACP President Francys Johnson steps down

BALTIMORE - Francys Johnson, the 38-year-old civil rights attorney and pastor from Statesboro, stepped down as president of the Georgia NAACP Saturday at the 108th National Convention in Baltimore.

Johnson is credited with restoring the voting rights litigation prowess of NAACP in Georgia while attracting younger professionals and bridging the gaps in Georgia between millennial activists groups such as Black Lives Matter.

“Francys Johnson lent his talent, time and treasure to the Association at a critical time. I don’t

think we’ve seen the last of his leadership,” said Derrick Johnson, newly appointed interim president and CEO.

Johnson, who has been mentioned as possible challenger to Rick Allen (R-Augusta) in Georgia’s 12th

Congressional District, flirted with what’s next for the father of two in prepared remarks: “Our nation is in crisis. This moment calls for every head, heart, and hand to engage the work of ensuring that all the promises of our democracy are fulfilled.

The upcoming election in 16 months carries consequences unlike any other mid-term in our lifetime. This election will either reinforce and sustain the path we’re on — or change it. I promise no one will work harder to turn this momentum for change into a reality,” said Johnson.

While Johnson stopped short of an announcement; the NAACP rules require officers to step down to run for public office.

The day stirred many emotions for Johnson who served 30 years within the NAACP at every level including Youth Council, College Chapter, Adult Branch, State Conference and previous service on the National Staff as the Southeast Regional Director.

“It’s emotional to step away from doing something you love,” said Johnson.

“Street heat and legal teeth were the hallmark of Johnson’s leadership with the Georgia NAACP. He brought his marching boots and law books,” said Graylan Quarterman, a member State Executive Committee.

During Johnson’s tenure that Georgia NAACP filed ten (10) federal or state lawsuits addressing racialized redistricting, voting caging and purging, as well as at-large voting.

“He was as comfortable leading the powerful demonstrations across Georgia in response to police-involved deaths of citizens and the Atlanta March for Women and Social Justice, the largest protest march in Georgia history at 63,000 protesters, as he was giving an argument in court or sermon in the pulpit. That takes a rare combination of talents,” said Rev. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church.

In response to the news Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality posted “thank you for your inclusion of LGBT issues and your unshakeable commitment to social justice.”

The Georgia NAACP will elect its next State President in October at the 75th State Convention in Augusta.

“The new President will have to work with Georgia’s next governor; the state legislature; and

leaders across the public and private sectors to address changing demographics and global realities that demand a change from business as usual. If the citizens of Georgia are going to compete and win in this global century, we need the most comprehensive Pre-K - 12 education, the most robust economic development plan, a truly impartial criminal justice system and the best universities and colleges,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson that “doesn’t just benefit African-Americans, that benefits all Georgians. The

NAACP issues are not black and white; they are red, white and blue and go to the very heart of making real the full promise of America’s democracy.”

Johnson’s departure comes at a critical conjuncture where the venerated organization’s relevancy is being openly questioned.

“You can’t look at young folks and say you’re going to be the leaders of the future. You

have to give them the opportunity to lead now and that’s what the NAACP believes,” said Leon Russell, chairman of the board of directors for the NAACP.

“He walks in the footsteps of the greats including Savannah’s Ralph Mark Gilbert and W.W. Law; Macon’s Julius Caesar Hope; and Madison’s Walter Curtis Butler. As a scholar, a practitioner of law, and a dynamic young leader, Johnson raised the bar of excellence and made the NAACP more attractive to young professionals” said Russell.

The NAACP National Convention runs July 22 - 26 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

For the high court, 18 years is plenty-Ben Feuer

The writer is chairman of the California Appellate Law Group, a law firm that practices in the U.S. Supreme Court. He wrote this for the Los Angeles Times.

Rumors are swirling that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Republican-appointed judge whose swing vote has preserved détente between the court’s left and right for nearly a generation, may announce his retirement in the next year.

The mere idea that Kennedy’s seat could get filled by President Donald Trump and the conservative Republican Senate has sent many on the left into a tailspin of anxiety and despair.

In the 29 years Kennedy has served on the court, he has authored opinions or cast tie-breaking votes in major, divisive cases, including decisions that preserved a constitutional right to abortion, recognized social and sexual liberties for gays and lesbians, granted habeas corpus protections to Guantanamo Bay prisoners, confirmed a Second Amendment right to own a handgun in the home and applied the First Amendment to corporations engaged in political speech.

To many liberals, replacing Kennedy with a strict originalist like Justice Neil Gorsuch would feel downright apocalyptic. Indeed, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, told reporters in April that the battle to replace Kennedy will be “Armageddon.”

Liberals aren’t the only ones who get anxious over Supreme Court appointments, of course. When it seemed that Antonin Scalia’s seat would go to Merrick Garland, which would have created a more liberal majority on the court, the Republican-led Senate refused to give Garland any hearings or votes for an unprecedented 293 days.

Things are clearly out of hand.

To lower the stakes — and attending dysfunction — of each court appointment, both parties would do well to consider a scheme put forward by two Northwestern University law professors.

Steven Calabresi and James Lindgren proposed that Supreme Court justices should serve 18-year terms, with a new judge appointed every two years. Each president would in effect get to nominate two justices for every term in office, and the Senate would agree to promptly consider them on a regular schedule.

The sitting court would be composed of the nine most recent appointees. More senior judges would continue receiving full pay and would sit as judges on lower federal appellate courts or back on the Supreme Court to fill a vacancy or recusal. With a new justice always around the corner and a built-in limit to the length of any one person’s influence, the Senate might more easily accept an opposing president’s nomination.

Such a system would also eliminate the “tyranny of the young,” whereby presidents seek to appoint the youngest possible justices. New voices and ideas could more easily populate the court, and brilliant, innovative judges wouldn’t be sidestepped for being too old.

The frequency of appointments might allow presidents to experiment a little, perhaps by appointing a trial judge or a politician. It might also encourage minority parties and interest groups to limit their cries of impending doom.

The Constitution’s Article III has long been interpreted to grant judges life tenure. But the text actually states that judges “shall hold their offices during good behavior” and receive “a compensation, which shall not be diminished,” while in office. The rest of the Supreme Court’s structure, and what it means to “hold” the “office” of a Supreme Court justice, is left to Congress.

Life expectancy today is a full 30 years greater than it was in 1789. In the country’s first 200 years, the average Supreme Court justice served for 15 years; Kennedy is creeping up on 30. Gorsuch, fit and 49 years old, could serve for the next 35 years or more.

That’s a very long time for an unelected official to exercise such vast public authority.
